Axial fans move air parallel to the shaft around which the blades spin, along the axis of rotation. They are used in various applications, from domestic (e.g. ceiling fans) to industrial (e.g. engine cooling fans), in which a large volume of flow is required. Axial fans are typically cheaper, quieter and of a simpler construction than comparable centrifugal fans, which are generally used in applications requiring more pressure for a given air volume.
